Should believers in the Messiah be listening to heavy metal and other forms of secular music?

Should believers in the Messiah be listening to heavy metal and other forms of secular music?

Music is a powerful tool that can be both positive and negative. The Bible provides many examples of music being used in worship and also to soothe troubled spirits in the case of Saul and David.

Realizing that music contains power over the mind and soul, it’s important that we’re selective as to what type of music we listen to as a believer. As we are to refrain from conversations and entertainment that promote evil speaking and thoughts, the same would apply to music. For this reason, we should be very selective as to the music we listen to. While there is nothing wrong with certain forms of secular music, we must ensure that it’s not promoting a message or spirit of opposition to Yahweh’s Word. This would include endorsing things like immortality or depravity (e.g. adultery, homosexuality, etc.) or music that may replace Yahweh’s shalom for a spirit of rebellion.

In the case of heavy metal music, we believe this form of music would violate both concerns. Heavy metal songs often promote immorality along with a spirit that is not of Yahweh. In some cases, the spirit may be demonic, allowing demonic influence to take root within our lives. For this reason, we suggest avoiding heavy metal and other forms of music that would offend Yahweh or provide access for the Evil One.

“Be ye therefore followers of Elohim, as dear children; And walk in love, as Messiah also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to Yahweh for a sweetsmelling savour. But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints; Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks. For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Messiah and of Yahweh,” Ephesians 5:1-5.

What is YRM’s position on the wearing of tassels or tzitzit?

What is YRM’s position on the wearing of tassels or tzitzit?

We do not teach for or against tassels or tzitzit; we leave this to personal conviction. The reason for this is that there is a reasonable debate on both sides.

Some who favor tassels will point out that’s it’s mentioned in the Torah and that they were worn by Yahshua the Messiah. Both of these points are scripturally valid, Numbers 15:38-39; Deuteronomy 22:12; Matthew 23:5.

Others who are not convicted will point out the origin of the command was in response to the Israelites deliberately breaking the Sabbath, which Scripture may support, Numbers 15:32-38. They also state that as the tassels were a reminder for the Israelites in the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit serves as a reminder for believers in the New Testament, Luke 12:12; Romans 9:1; 1Corinthians 12:3; Hebrews 2:4.

For these reasons, we leave this command to the personal conviction of individual believers. We do not condemn or criticize those who choose to wear them or those who choose not to wear them.

Is the earth a sphere or do we live on a flat earth? Also, are we living in a heliocentric model of the universe?

Is the earth a sphere or do we live on a flat earth? Also, are we living in a heliocentric model of the universe?

The Bible describes the earth as circular in shape. Isaiah 40:22 states, “It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in.”

The word “circle” derives from the Hebrew chuwg. Strong’s defines this word as a “…from OT:2328; a circle.” The Brown Driver & Briggs Hebrew Lexicon provides a similar quote: “a circle, a circuit, a compass.” Some will agree that the earth is circular in shape, but is flat and not a three-dimensional sphere.

As seen above, BDB expands the definition of chuwg to include a “vault,” which is a three-dimensional shape. It’s also noteworthy that according to Modern Hebrew, chuwg includes the definition of a sphere.

Regarding the heliocentric model, i.e., planets revolve around the sun, the Bible does not have much to say about this. However, we find ample evidence in science for both the heliocentric model and the sphere of the earth.

As early as 500 BCE, Pythagoras of Samos, a well-known Greek mathematician, hypothesized that the sun was sphere-shaped and that the earth rotated around it. As a side note, Pythagorean theorem was named after Pythagoras. Plato (427-347 BCE) and Aristotle (384-322 BCE), along with nearly all Greek writers after the 5th century, alsobelieved in a spherical earth.

Flat Earth

Aristotle based his belief on several natural phenomena. For example, he noticed stars that could be seen in Cyrus could not be seen in the northern region. He also observed that when traveling south, the southern constellations rose higher above the horizon. In addition, he noticed that during a lunar eclipse the shadow of the earth was circular.

This theory was gradually accepted through late antiquity and the Middle-Ages and would eventually replace the idea of a flat earth. Today, this has been further confirmed by modern science, including thousands of pictures from space verifying the earth is spherical in shape.

From our perspective, the thought of hundreds of thousands of world leaders, scientists, graphic artists, engineers, and staff of every space agency in the world, private and international, engaged in a worldwide conspiracy to deceive the masses is not reasonable. This belief has also caused unnecessary division within the body of Messiah.

Why weren’t the rest of the Hebrew names which begin with “J” changed to “Y” in your Restoration Study Bible?

Why weren’t the rest of the Hebrew names which begin with “J” changed to “Y” in your Restoration Study Bible?

One of the goals for the Restoration Study Bible was for it to have a wide appeal. This included those in the Hebrew Roots / Messianic movement and also those in nominal or traditional worship. This was one reason why we retained the traditional use of the letter “J.” Also, since only Yahweh and Yahshua’s Names are technically holy or set apart for reverence, we again did not see the need to change the other names with a “J.” Saying that, we acknowledge that the “J” is not correct based on the biblical Hebrew.

What does the Bible say about smoking cigarettes?

What does the Bible say about smoking cigarettes? Some say it’s okay and others say that the Bible condemns it. What’s the truth?

While cigarettes are not specifically mentioned in the Bible, it is quite clear that as believers we should avoid them since we are not to pollute our bodies. This was the reason why Yahweh gave the dietary food laws in Leviticus 11 and Deuteronomy 14. Eating swine and other unclean meats that the Bible prohibits is a health concern, which science is now validating. The same would also be true for smoking. According to the Centers for Disease Control, smoking causes more deaths than from HIV, illegal drug use, alcohol use, motor vehicle injuries, and firearm-related incidents combined. There are also many side effects with smoking, including premature aging, psoriasis, thinner hair, scarring, tooth loss, cataracts, and skin cancer.

Beyond the obvious health concerns, there is also a spiritual aspect to this. Paul in 1Corinthians 3:16-17 states, “Know ye not that ye are the temple of Yahweh, and that the Spirit of Elohim dwelleth in you? If any man defile the temple of Yahweh, him shall Elohim destroy; for the temple of Yahweh is holy, which temple ye are.” As believers in the Messiah we represent Yahweh’s temple. For those who would destroy this temple, Paul states here that Yahweh will destroy them. We believe that smoking would fall under this category of destruction.

In the Old Testament Yahweh prohibited all “strange fire” with His worship. In one example of defiance, the two sons of Aaron lost their lives. “And Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took either of them his censer, and put fire therein, and put incense thereon, and offered strange fire before Yahweh, which he commanded them not. And there went out fire from Yahweh, and devoured them, and they died before Yahweh,” Numbers 10:1-2.

Since we represent Yahweh’s temple today and are commanded to keep it free from pollutants, there is a spiritual parallel between the actions of Nadab and Abihu and smoking. When a person smokes, they run the risk of offering “strange fire” in their temple and offending Yahweh as the two sons of Aaron did in the Old Testament.

For these reasons, it’s YRM’s policy not to allow smoking on or within our facilities or to baptize those into Yahshua’s Name who are currently smoking.  If you are smoking, we encourage you to seek help and overcome this addictive and harmful habit. And as with many other things, prayer can be a great ally in conquering this enemy.

Why is it that some people cannot accept the Truth of Scripture?

Why is it that some cannot accept the Truth? Also, please help me understand what laws are required/not required. Also, do you have any articles defending the Sabbath and the use of Yahweh’s Name?

Why people don’t accept the truth is a great question, but one not easy to answer. There are many reasons for this. Probably the biggest reason is tradition. It’s really hard to accept that what you and your family believe is not true. Another related reason is pride. It takes a person of humility to admit the possibility of being wrong and the ability to unbiasedly reconsider their belief system. Another reason is peer-pressure, as you have already experienced. The closer you get to the truth, the further you get from the world. The feeling of isolation and being alone is more than many can take.

Another reason for this, it’s not meant for all to hear and understand the truth now. This was the reason Yahshua said He spoke in parables: “He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given. For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he hath. Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand. And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive: For this people’s heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted and I should heal them,” Matthew 13:11-15.

Regarding what is required today, while we cannot provide an all-encompassing list of commandments, we believe that the Ten Commandments, all moral laws, and all laws of worship, including the Sabbaths and Feast days, are required today. Regarding laws that would not be required for believers, this would include certain civil laws, judicial laws, and sacrificial laws. For example, the Bible commands that we place a railing around our roof. Since Israel used their roofs as an extension of their living space, this made sense. However, this would not be practical for most modern homes.

If you have not already, I might suggest reviewing the below booklets. These would equip you with many answers to some of today’s arguments with the Sabbath and Name.

Does 1Corinthians 11:16 negate the wearing of head coverings?

Does 1Corinthians 11:16 negate the wearing of head coverings?

Paul states in 1Corinthians 11:16, “But if any man seems to be contentious, we have no such custom, neither the assemblies of Yahweh.”

Many use this passage to confirm that in the event a dispute arose over the head covering that it was no longer needed. However, this would conflict with Paul’s earlier statement in verse 5 that if a woman refused to wear a covering she might as well be shorn, which was a show of disgrace in antiquity.  In verse 16, Paul is simply confirming that if someone became contentious about the head covering, the assembly had no other form of worship. In other words, they were to honor this practice.

Matthew Henry’s Commentary confirms that this head covering was a common practice and a sign of decency in the early assembly: “Custom is in a great measure the rule of decency. And the common practice of the churches is what would have them govern themselves by. He does not silence the contentious by mere authority, but lets them know that they would appear to the world as very odd and singular in their humour if they would quarrel for a custom to which all the churches of Christ were at that time utter strangers, or against a custom in which they all concurred, and that upon the ground of natural decency. It was the common usage of the churches for women to appear in public assemblies, and join in public worship, veiled; and it was manifestly decent that they should do so.” The Wycliffe Bible Commentary adds, “…no custom of women worshiping without coverings. …for early church history bears witness that in Rome, Antioch, and Africa the custom became the norm.”

The wearing of a veil or covering was not only a custom in the early assembly but also in the Old Testament. Evidence for this is seen from Rebekah (Genesis 24:65) and Ruth (Ruth 3:15).

As with many other biblical norms and customs, the wearing of the head covering has been disparaged in light of today’s social reengineering of culture and family.

Do you believe in generational curses?

Do you believe in generational curses?

No, we do not believe in generational curses. Ezekiel 18:20 makes it clear each person will be judged individually for his or her own sins. It reads, “The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.”

Regarding passages such as Exodus 20:5, which seems to indicate generational curses, I believe that these passages are simply accounting for human nature. Most people simply follow the same pattern as the previous generation. Often, it requires several generations to break this cycle. This is why Scripture mentions to the 3rd or 4th generation.

What Does The Bible Say About Organ Donations/Transplants?

Is there a verse in the Bible that addresses organ donations/transplants?

There is no scripture that speaks directly about organ donation. The closest passage is Lev 17:14: “…because the life of every creature is its blood. That is why I have said to the Israelites, ‘You must not eat the blood of any creature, because the life of every creature is its blood; anyone who eats it must be cut off.’” Also see Leviticus 7:26; Deuteronomy 12:16-24; 15:23. Yahweh commands that we abstain from eating blood. We believe that this command would also apply to organ donations and transplants. For this reason, we discourage organ donations and transplants.

Can women teach and what roles do they have in Scripture?

What role did Esther play in Scripture? I’m asking because I was surprised that you say that women cannot hold any public office within the assembly. I thought Esther was a prophet and even asked for permission to approach the king. I also thought women were allowed to teach other women and still share the good news of Yahshua to others and especially to other women.

We are not saying that ladies have no role or value within the assembly. In many cases, women served as support roles, Luke 8:1-3, Acts 16:13-15; 18:24-26, Romans 16:1-6. They are also instructed to teach their children and other ladies, Titus 2:3-5. When we say that they have no official role we are referring to ministers and those ordained to the work (priests, elders, deacons, etc.). There are no examples of ladies being ordained to the ministry or being placed in public teaching roles in either the Old or New testaments.

Regarding Esther, she was not a prophetess, but a queen. While she saved her people through her bravery, she never taught the people. This job was given to Ezra and the priests.

It’s never our intention to degrade the value of women. We believe that women provide many blessings to the home and to the assembly. None greater than being a mother and mentor to other ladies.
